Why winter windows weep
Condensation on the inside of the glass is water. Here is how it forms, what a window vacuum does, and what to compare before you buy.
What you are looking at
When indoor air is warmer and wetter than the glass, water leaves the air and sits on the pane. Kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms do this on cold nights. It is ordinary. On its own it is not a verdict on the walls.
A cloth pushes the water around. A dry lip leaves a line if the sleeve is dirty. A window vacuum lifts the water into a tank so it does not run onto the sill.
What to compare
- Head width against your narrowest sash and your widest door.
- Tank size. A small tank is lighter and needs emptying sooner.
- Runtime. About 18 minutes covers a few rooms. About half an hour covers a flat.
- A hand tool, or a robot that crosses one pane while you stay with it.
- Pads. A dry lip on a dirty sleeve streaks.
What these tools do not do
They do not dry a wet wall, treat mould, or replace a vent. If water is coming through the frame, that is a repair. The vacuum is for the glass.
